Icebergs
Icebergs are pieces of glaciers (very large sheets of thick ice that can be seen in mountains or on the coast of some oceans) that slide into the ocean. Icebergs can be small or large - as large as 2.5 kilometres across and 70 meters high. Usually the part of the glacier below the water is seven times as large as the part above the water. This is because icebergs are made from fresh water. Seawater is salty and light. The freshwater that makes up icebergs is heavier than the seawater. The icebergs sink so that only the small top part of them can be seen. Ships that come too close to an iceberg can hit the large underwater part of the iceberg. This is what happened to the Titanic.

Icebergs are dangerous but beautiful. Sometimes they look like castles, arches or mosques. At night they shine and seem very white as they reflect light. New icebergs are formed constantly. Most of the icebergs in the North Atlantic Ocean break off from the edge of Greenland's icecap, especially in the spring. Icebergs melt very quickly. As they melt they may break in half, turn over or lose large pieces of ice. When an iceberg breaks, it makes a very loud noise. Some icebergs are so large that they can travel 5000 kilometers before they liquefy completely.
